The challenge
The project investigates how design is often framed as either technical or artistic, and reframes it as a continuous negotiation between constraints, function, and expression. The book needed to translate complex ideas across disparate texts into a unified reading experience, highlighting how constraints (technological, philosophical, or structural) serve as catalysts for creativity.
The Design System
The book is structured as a dialogue between two design philosophies: one rooted in technical precision and digital systems, the other in expressive humanist print traditions. Layout, typography, and hierarchy highlight the tension between structure and creativity.
Footnotes, annotations, and callouts create layered context, while the contrast between bitmap typography and historic humanist forms reflects the evolution of design as a living language. The structure guides readers toward a balance where aesthetics and utility coexist.
